Australia was declared polio-free in 2000, but we continue to monitor for evidence of outbreaks here and overseas. Since 2005, the oral attenuated viral vaccine has been replaced by an injectable version which has no risk of vaccine-induced polio. However, in some poorer countries, the oral vaccine is still used.
